What I got was so much more. Far more than a class on how to use the Ekahau software, the ECSE class successfully combines theory and practice, facilitating the comprehension of wireless fundamentals, while equipping students for the advanced wireless design and analysis.
My class, led by Blake Krone — CCIECWNEand kind of a big deal on the internet, spent the first day and a half not touching the software but focusing on how wireless works. This wax on, wax off approach might seem like it would be tedious, but reviewing the basics of wireless in a room full of wireless professionals helped reinforce easily forgotten technical details, while spawning informative and, at times, controversial discussions on all aspects of implementing wireless networks.
Being a self-taught Ekahau enthusiast, I learned a great deal about things I had been doing right, and more importantly, about things I had been doing wrong due to the assumptions I had made while working with the product. While much of the Ekahau software is intuitive, several tips and tricks introduced throughout the ECSE course made the workflow of the product more efficient and less cumbersome. The exercises provided challenges that had fellow classmates querying each other for various approaches, which I found to be one of the best parts of the class experience.
With multiple CWNEs in a room packed with people who do wireless every day, the class conversations quickly got deep into sharing practical approaches and experiences, not just how a button or feature worked in Ekahau, but how that button or feature mattered in designing and validating wireless networks. This tool is definitely on my wish list now. Disclaimer: While Ekahau was generous enough to provide a product evaluation license to me, my opinions are totally my own, as all redheads are far too stubborn to have it any other way.

Why IoT? FoodDrink Class. Business Class.Podcast: Play in new window Download Embed. What certifications are available out there for wireless network engineering? When I did some research, I found that there is really one authority on wireless certifications. This episode is about identifying vendor-neutral certifications and vendor-specific certifications. I talk about some of the reasons why one may want to be certified in wireless.
Not everyone gets certified and its definitely not an absolute requirement to hold a certification. Additionally, many will fail certification exams.
I have failed a couple in my career. Keep studying and stay determined.
You can go for vendor specific certifications from vendors such as Cisco, Aruba, and Ruckus. While these certification tracks will teach you some WiFi specific technology, they are aimed more towards configuring a specific vendors equipment.
The key takeaway here is that you still need a solid foundation in wired networking and wireless networking. They are vendor neutral.
Thanks for listening to this episode on Wireless Certifications. I want to know what you think about certifications. Does certifications help you in your career? Great Podcast! Rowell knows wi-fi.
